Why it matters

Layaway and installment-deposit plans on big-ticket items (furniture, jewelry, appliances) are common in Saudi retail, but the cash collection schedule and the revenue recognition point are entirely disconnected: the retailer receives money in stages while the customer's control over the goods does not transfer until the final payment and release, sometimes weeks or months later. Recognizing revenue as each installment is collected - matching the cash inflow - materially overstates revenue and understates liabilities in interim periods, and understates cost of sales/inventory in the same periods. This matters particularly at period-end cutoff: any layaway arrangement with installments outstanding at year-end must remain a contract liability, not revenue, no matter how much of the total price has already been collected. Because layaway plans can run for months, a retailer with a large layaway book carries a correspondingly large contract liability that must be tracked per contract, not just in aggregate, to support proper cutoff and disclosure.

Diagnostic questions

At what point does control of the specific item transfer to the customer: on final payment and pickup, or at an earlier stage such as segregation of the item? Are deposits refundable if the customer cancels, and is a cancellation/forfeiture fee retained and recognized separately from the delivery performance obligation? Is the item identified and segregated as the customer's from an early stage even though legal title has not yet passed?

Recognition

  1. Identify the performance obligation: delivery of the specified item (e.g., a sofa) to the customer, which is satisfied at a single point in time when control transfers - typically on physical release/delivery after full payment, not progressively as cash is received.
  2. As each installment is received, recognize the cash collected as an increase to a contract liability (customer deposit), not as revenue, since the retailer has an obligation to either deliver the goods or refund the customer.
  3. Continue to hold the goods as the retailer's own inventory (not derecognized) throughout the installment period, since control has not transferred to the customer.
  4. Only recognize revenue for the full transaction price at the point control transfers to the customer (i.e., on final payment and release/delivery), extinguishing the contract liability in full at that point.
  5. Simultaneously recognize cost of sales and derecognize the inventory at its carrying cost when revenue is recognized, matching the expense to the revenue in the same period.
  6. Assess whether a significant financing component exists if the installment period is long (e.g., over 12 months) or if timing between payment and delivery is unusual for the industry - if so, consider whether the transaction price should be adjusted for the time value of money (in practice, most short layaway plans of a few months are not adjusted as immaterial/practical expedient).
  7. If a customer defaults and forfeits the plan per contract terms, follow the specific forfeiture policy (e.g., partial refund vs. full retention as forfeiture income) as contractually defined, recognizing income only when the retailer's obligation to deliver or refund is extinguished.

القياس

Measurement

Measure the contract liability at the cumulative cash amount received from the customer to date (not discounted, for typical short-duration layaway plans without a significant financing component). On final delivery, measure revenue at the full contract transaction price (equal to total installments collected, assuming no additional fees/penalties), and measure cost of sales at the inventory's carrying amount (lower of cost and net realizable value) as of the delivery date, not at the price originally paid by the retailer if there has been any subsequent write-down. If a significant financing component is identified (rare for short layaway plans but possible for long-tenor jewelry/furniture installment programs), the transaction price should be adjusted using the discount rate that would be reflected in a separate financing transaction between the entity and the customer at contract inception.

Presentation & disclosure

Disclose: the balance of contract liabilities (customer deposits/layaway) at period end, presented as a current liability (or split current/non-current if delivery is expected beyond 12 months); the amount of revenue recognized during the period that was included in the opening contract liability balance; the accounting policy for layaway/deposit arrangements, including when revenue is recognized and how forfeitures are treated; a description of significant payment terms (installment schedule, forfeiture/refund policy); disclosure of any significant financing component and the discount rate applied, if applicable; the amount of goods held as inventory that relate to unfulfilled layaway contracts, if separately tracked and material.

Common mistakes

  • Recognizing revenue proportionally as each installment is collected instead of only at final delivery when control transfers
  • failing to record a contract liability at all and instead crediting installments directly to a suspense or revenue account
  • releasing goods to the customer before the final installment is paid in full, creating a mismatch between control transfer and payment terms that needs separate credit risk consideration
  • not derecognizing inventory and recognizing cost of sales in the same period as the revenue recognition on final delivery (timing mismatch between revenue and related cost)
  • mishandling forfeitures by recognizing the entire forfeited deposit as revenue without assessing whether contract terms actually entitle the retailer to retain it, or ignoring partial refund obligations
  • treating layaway deposits received near year-end as revenue to boost reported sales, when the goods have not yet been delivered (cutoff error).

Simple example

A furniture retailer sells a sofa under a layaway plan: the customer pays 4 monthly instalments of SAR 1,250 each (total SAR 5,000) before the sofa is released; the sofa's carrying cost in inventory is SAR 3,000.
Journal entries for each of the 4 monthly instalments received (repeated x4):
Dr Cash 1,250
Cr Contract liability - layaway deposits 1,250

After the 4th and final instalment, the sofa is released to the customer. Revenue and cost of sales are recognized together at this point:
Dr Contract liability - layaway deposits 5,000
Cr Revenue 5,000

Dr Cost of sales 3,000
Cr Inventory 3,000
(Gross margin recognized at delivery = SAR 5,000 - SAR 3,000 = SAR 2,000)

Professional judgment

The main judgment areas are: whether a significant financing component exists for longer-tenor layaway/installment programs (common for jewelry sold over 6-12+ months), which requires assessing the purpose of the payment timing (financing benefit vs. practical logistics/risk mitigation reasons, such as protecting the retailer against non-payment on a high-value item) - IFRS 15 provides a practical expedient not to adjust for financing components expected to be one year or less; how to account for forfeited deposits when a customer cancels or defaults, which depends heavily on the specific contractual/legal entitlement to retain some or all of the deposit (this can vary by jurisdiction and consumer protection rules, not purely an accounting policy choice); and whether holding the goods physically aside for a specific customer for an extended layaway period should trigger any separate consideration (it generally does not change the control analysis, since legal title and risk of loss typically remain with the retailer until final payment).
