In plain words
Listed companies, and companies reporting to regulators or lenders, often publish quarterly or half-year reports. IAS 34 sets the minimum content: condensed financial statements plus selected explanatory notes. The accounting policies are the same as in the annual statements, and figures are measured on a year-to-date basis, so reporting more often does not change the full-year result.
Why it matters
If the entity issues financial statements for a period shorter than a full year, for example quarterly or half-year reports for a regulator, a listing, or lenders, IAS 34 sets the minimum content and the measurement principles for those interim periods.
Diagnostic questions
How often do you issue financial statements, annually only, or also quarterly/half-year? Are you listed or planning to list? Do lenders or regulators require interim statements?
Recognition
An interim report contains, as a minimum, condensed financial statements and selected explanatory notes. Use the same accounting policies as the annual statements.
Measurement
Measure interim results on a year-to-date basis; the frequency of reporting should not change the annual result. Apply the same recognition and measurement bases used at year end.
Presentation & disclosure
Disclose events and transactions significant to understanding changes since the last annual report, and note that interim statements do not repeat all annual disclosures.
Common mistakes
- Treating each interim period as fully discrete instead of year-to-date
- changing policies between interim and annual reports
- omitting required explanatory notes.
Simple example
A listed company publishes a condensed half-year report with year-to-date figures and selected notes, using the same policies it will apply at year end.
Professional judgment
Judgement is needed for interim estimates (e.g., the effective tax rate and impairment) and for deciding what is 'significant' enough to disclose.
